Below is a list of articles I have compiled that will help to bring some awareness to different aspects of wellness. Its important to look across the spectrum at different areas to ensure balance and true understanding. Awareness of these topics will help to build up that understanding.
A Little Movement Goes a Long Way
The article talks about the necessity of movement and how, despite popular belief, it doesn’t take high-intensity for 60 minutes per day. In fact, according to the article, just 30 minutes of low-intensity exercise could decrease early death risk by 17%. If you do medium or high intensity, your early death risk DOUBLES.
Mindfulness May Indeed Be The Best Medicine
Twenty percent of the U.S. population is living with chronic pain. There is now an alternative to the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT); its mindfulness. This is particularly helpful because not everyone responds well to CBT. It provides an alternative to help with psychological stress and pain severity.
The GM Diet: Does It Really Work?
The answer of course is yes and no. Due to the major caloric deficit it runs on, the individual on the diet will lose weight. However, its not the kind of healthy and sustainable weight loss that most of us are looking for. In fact, it helps to further prove that there is no substitute for adopting long-term lifestyle changes.
Questions to Ask When Changing Lifestyles
The article Losing Weight: Questions for the Doctor gives people some basic question to bring to their next doctor visit. It gives the individual a road map to navigating their game plan for weight loss. When people are looking to make lifestyle changes, it is always a good idea to consult their doctor. This is especially true when the lifestyle change is in the interest of weight loss.
Helping Your Child Maintain Their Weight
Maintain your health is hard. Maintaining someone else’s weight is even harder! This is a major responsibility of a parent. Understanding first that you are a role model to your child is important. Beyond that, it’s important to keep them on track in order avoid problems such as asthma, diabetes, and even some self-esteem issues.
Fun Healthy Snacks for Kids
Continuing the trend of taking care of your children and owning their wellness journey, this article gives out plenty of tips for kids snacks. These are healthy alternatives that kids can even prepare along with you. How about the added bonus of quality time?
Over the Counter Weight Loss Medication
In this article, we looked into what Hydroxycut actually does. We learned what it is that makes it work. The article cited instances in which the product was recalled for safety concerns including it leading to cases of rhabdomyolysis.
This article took a more in depth look into at the negative side effects of the product. It described things to be aware of such as caffeine content. Side effects included manic episodes, caffeine overdose and rhabdomyolosis.
This resource was used to help Andrew determine the proper number of calories to intake in order to help him achieve weight loss. This is a much safer alternative to over the counter meds. Plus, it creates more sustainable weight loss.
Nutrition Globalization
Globalization is a force that continues to gain momentum and has shown absolutely no sign of slowing down any time soon. Depending on your perspective this could be seen as majorly beneficial, or as a detriment to our societies.
The Levin Institute breaks down what globalization is in the article. It also outlines that world trade increased by 20x since 1950! A pretty significant growth over that time. This is why companies like McDonalds are in nearly every town you travel through!
In Common dollars and sense, Hamm outlines the impact of globalization on our health. Some alarming stats were in this article to really help drive home the gravity of the situation. In any given day, 1 in 3 kids consumes fast food. The average American eats between 4-5 commercially prepared meals every single week.
Eating On a Budget with Children
This article showed the approximate cost of raising a child. It goes to break down how much you’re expected to spend this year and total over their entire childhood years. Eye opening when you see that one kids costs approx. $270,000!
Some really good tips for shopping on a tight budget were found in our assigned reading! Schlenker included some great tips like shopping at places like Sam’s Club or Costco. Buying in bulk drives the unit cost down. This brings the overall value up and costs less money when buying larger amounts of items. This is much more economical than buying smaller amounts at local farmer’s markets.
